Reviving Playreading: A Night of Laughter and Reflection Author:Raju Raman   Posted On:2024-11-20

The playreading session on Wednesday, 13 November 2024, marked a triumphant return to storytelling and performance, as members gathered in the bar for an evening of Bengali theatre. The night featured four short, engaging plays: LEP, PREMBOOK.COM, and PHUCHKA, each bringing a unique blend of humour and relatable themes to the stage. The performers were Raja Mukhopadhyay, Paramita Roy, Tapasi Mukherjee, Sanjay Mukhopadhyay and Sulagna Mukhopadhyay.

LEP opened with a hilarious tug-of-war over an undersized quilt, capturing the quirks of domestic life and drawing hearty laughter from the audience. PREMBOOK.COM took a more modern twist, humorously exploring the pitfalls of social media romance with situations that felt all too familiar in today’s digital age. Finally, PHUCHKA tapped into the timeless addiction to street food, with characters humorously lost in the irresistible appeal of Kolkata’s iconic phuchkas.

An interim solo performance of a short skit JAMELA by Tripti Ganguly added to the flavour of the evening. The atmosphere was lighthearted and warm, with attendees enjoying the plays as they sipped and savored bites, creating an intimate and lively gathering. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees eagerly discussing the stories post-show and hoping for more such playreading sessions in the future. A delightful return to theatre, the evening was a memorable mix of laughter, reflection, and community spirit.
