A Slice of China at the DI Author: Shishir Goenka   Posted On: 18 Feb 2019

Barely a month and a half into 2019, DI got the opportunity to celebrate another New Year get together, The Chinese New Year. While some might still be recovering from the hangover of the long gone winter festive season, the Annual Chinese festival gave the members and guests the perfect excuse to make merry and enjoy themselves.

I guess the weather Gods too wanted this event to be perfect, as it drizzled on the morning of the event, which eventually made the Celsius drop down, by the time the evening started.

The function was held at Indoors@DI. Bright color combinations of red and yellow adorned the venue and it added beautifully to the various events that were to follow for the evening.

The artistes for the evening consisted of James Liao and team. They had synchronized a sequence of skillfully done up performances of various categories that not only amazed the audience, but also left some of us gasping for breath at the talent they displayed.
There was something for everybody in terms of the diverse body of talent the artistes possessed and showcased.

The Group Lion Dance began the proceedings for the evening. Artistes dressed as lions in vibrant coloured costumes took the center stage with apt background music. The coordination between them was proof of the long hours of practice they must have put in, to come up with the kind of performance they did.

Following this act, were the solo dance and the dragon dance . The audience was also made aware of Tai Chi, which is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits.

Another highlight performance was of the 'Acrobatic Lion Dance'. In this, the Lion performs on the poles, whereas the poles signifies a mountain or an obstacle to reach his food- the green lettuce (which symbolises prosperity). Once the Lion gets his greens, he chews it to throw it towards the audiences.

If the Indoors was a visual treat, the outdoors was a lip smacking treat for the appetite. Various food counters were laid out for members and guests. The lawn was beautifully lit up with lanterns, adding authentic decorations for the evening. Food wise, there was something for everyone's taste bud. From momos to wontons, from chowmein to thai curry. Being spoilt for choice got a new meaning with the evening's food menu option.

A Special mention for our Entertainment Committee headed by Tanya, who as always makes sure to leave no stone unturned for her commitment towards DI and making the club events get the recognition they do, time after time.

To end the article, I would like to add that if New York is the city that never sleeps, then I guess DI is the club that never stops partying !
