Zooming across the Net Author:Leslie D'Gama   Posted On:2020-03-29

When the lockdown was announced early last week, we knew the kids were soon going to be super bored and difficult to manage.  An idea, born of a very successful online quiz that I had conducted with my office employees, popped up.  Why not invite the kids for a half-hour Chat with Uncle Les every day?

We started with 29 kids and are now at 45 kids aged 6-16 (and I suspect a few parents lurking in the background too!)

At a specified time daily we are getting into a Zoom conference call where we can see each other, talk to each other and do some fun things online.  So far we have had rounds of introduction, word games, puzzles, riddles and an online quiz.  In order to expand this further we asked the kids to write poems and present them online yesterday (the end of Week One).  The ones below 10 had to write 4 lines while the older ones had to write 8 lines on any of the three topics -- My Home, My Family, My Pet.  Sharing the writing with you here along with their names.

I would like to thank Christabel for helping me with the kids and also Samarjit who has helped to put together all the writing in readable text!

I have a pet cat

Who I have named brat

He loves to go out to play

But Due to this virus

He is stuck at home with me all day

Dylan Tims

My pet's name is trigger,

He has alot of vigour,

He eats bread and drinks milk

And loves sleeping on a bed of silk.

 Aaron Rocha

My pet's name is gold,

He is not very old,

though he really is bold.

He is a baby mouse,

And sleeps in his own house.

He is very smart

And watches me play darts.

He even nibbles on cheese tarts.

My family's story, no less than that of a comic book,

Is all you need to hear for your face to have a wacky look.

With my father always dressed in black, making it difficult for you to differentiate between him and coal,

And my mother, just the opposite, with making our house as pink as could be, as her only goal.

My brother, never finishing with his sermons, be it his relatives or his friends,

On the other hand, my sister, sleeping, eating, and watching Netflix to no end.

However, I, you know, am as perfect as could be,

But would soon be found in an asylum as I have such a mad family.

I had a snake

He swallowed a cake Then a garden rake and Then two Toy Soldiers that belong to my friend Jake

He ate my cat's toy Mouse.

The cost of my snake is more than 20,000 rupees because he contained many things in his stomach

When I woke up

My mother was cooking

My father was snoring

Corona virus is outside

And I'm stuck inside.

I have a pet dog,

It is always up to tricks,

I named it Gobbly-Hog,

Because it gobbles and licks!

Every day he likes to go down for a walk,

But now it’s “lockdown” all day Long.

I won’t be surprised if he soon starts to talk,

As he’s home all day listening to Baby Shark by Pink Fong

Home is home but quarantined are we

All of us at home nowhere to go you see

Dusting at home and reading books

Mama and Baba are such good cooks

First time when my father is all for me

Playing chess and reading story books just for me

Corona you are evil and bad devil

But you brought the world together against their will.

I am at home,

In a bathtub full of foam.

Now I'm busy cleaning a garden full of gnomes,

Brushing my hair with my pink comb.

Blasting the furious bombs, Maybe it's no good idea.

Reading my favourite book at home,

Cause it is my only home sweet home...

I dreamt of a Pet, in a jet

I took him to a vet, he did not fret

It wet his bed; vet made him rest

Alas, I woke...

was it a dog or a cat??

Raghav Chhotaria

My dogs name is Wets

It loves to catch flies with net

It plays with water a lot

He has fever and is hot

I took him to the vet

He stayed there for days as a pet

Now he has recovered and helps me as a

guard at night

In the morning he wakes up

As he sees the sunlight

Ananya

This is a tale of my parrot

Who hates to eat carrot

It has a red beak

And can also speak

It loves to eat chili

And thinks I am very silly

If we let him fly

He will always deny

To go back to its cage

Once he flew to a stage

Where many monkeys

Where dancing like donkeys

And this is a tale of my parrot

Who hates to eat carrot

Anisha

Grandparents, parents, my brother and me

If you come to my home, you will see

We keep it nice, tidy, clear and airy

We pray to god to keep it Corona Free

My family is my support system,

Without them I have no wisdom,

When I fight with them I am a fool,

But being with them is very cool!

The rule of my family to share and love,

But what they do is all of the above.

My home is a 120 years old,

And that is very very old,

It has got 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms,

A kitchen and a hall,

But that is not all.

It was built by a successful Jewish merchant,

And we are the fourth generation.

Rayed Faiyaz

Always happy to see me, showers me with kisses.

That's how I am the one he misses,

when I have a bad day, he doesn't ask why.

He just cuddles me close in case I need to cry my dog is just not my friend.

he is the best.

It's sometimes hard to express
Just what I'd like to say .
But always know you're thought of
in a very special way.
Though we may sometimes be
thousand miles apart.
There's always be a special place
for you inside my heart.
Subhaan Jain

East or West

My home is the best

Its a place to rest

Here I prepare for my test

To be best among the rest

It's a small nest

It protects us from the stress

I invite you to be my guest

Aishani

His ears are up

There is a smile on his face

He is so happy

To be back in his place

He had eaten his dinner

Played with the boys

Even had fun

With the old chew toys

Vacation is fun

But for him home is best

Finally, he'll have

Little quite rest
