The Sound of Music Author: Shishir Goenka   Posted On: 27 Jan 2019

My earliest memory of hearing an artist called Nigel dates back to more than a couple of decades ago. I was quite impressed by his style and flair for singing, and I made sure to attend to most of the musical evenings he catered to at other social clubs.

So, it was a matter of immense joy when he performed at our own club in 2017, after a long hiatus. DI had just added Bollywood night as a weekly entertainment event and he was one of the first Hindi singers to start the bandwagon. For some years now he is very aptly supported by Khaled, an extremely talented singer, whose voice acts as a perfect catalyst between Nigel and the crowd.

I remember there being an excited murmur amongst our members when they found out that the artist they mostly went to listen to, as guests to other social clubs, was starting to perform at their own club.

Last evening was no different at the Main Bar, where these two once again performed for us. Nigel started with his selection of Classical instrumental songs, which sets the momentum for the evening. I guess one of his favourite instrumental pieces is the 'Love Story theme', as he often begins the evening with this. Once the instrumental set was done, he and Khaled moved onto beautiful rhythms of the 70s, 80s and the 90s eras.

From Kishore Kumar, to Mohd. Rafi and Mukesh, the atmosphere got nostalgic. Songs, which most of us have grown up listening to were being sung by these two with such freshness and finesse that it's hard to believe how old these songs actually are.

The latter part of the evening mostly had new songs from the current lot of singers like Arijit, Atif and Shaan to name a few.

The most awaited part was the medley which was performed in the last hour . A non stop bouquet of dancing numbers which made sure the crowd left warming their seats to burn up the dance floor, dancing away to glory. Special mention must be made of this, as very rarely do we have an artist singing close to an hour without taking a break. To make the members feel more involved, Khaled moved around the bar with the mike and had members sing a line or two with him. It involved everyone in the bar in a gala evening.

To end this article, one thing which always brings a smile to my face is to see members of other clubs regularly coming and becoming a part of such musical evenings at DI. These are members of the same clubs, many of our DI members often visited in the past as guests, to hear an artiste called Nigel sing, and that includes yours truly too!
